Tanya Markvart
Markvart is an emerging, self-taught artist. She holds a BFA in film production and a PhD in planning. Her career began in the film industry, then transitioned to the environmental sector. Today, she balances her painting practice with her work for Parks Canada.
Markvart’s paintings explore the connection between internal/psychological and external/physical domains, draw from the subconscious, and give ordinary objects supernatural abilities. She paints with acrylic ink on wood panel to incorporate the natural grain in the work. The Spring Shoreline series, below, infuses meaning into arrangements of bedrock that comprise the northwest Georgian Bay shore. Organic configurations of dolostone and limestone are imbued with emotion and conceptual frames. The collection conveys a sense of omniscience and offers space for self-reflection. For the creator and the viewer alike, the paintings beg the question, "What do you see in the spring shoreline?"
